Custom plugins

Plugin architecture

Kirby comes with a very powerful but yet simple-to-start plugin architecture. A plugin is a simple folder with a bunch of PHP files. This would be the simplest form:

  • site/plugins/my-plugin/index.php

Kirby automatically loads all plugins from folders within /site/plugins and tries to find an index.php.

Plugins can also include an index.css and/or index.js file. These files are automatically loaded into the Panel. Even if your plugin does not contain any PHP code, we recommend to include the index.php file to properly register your plugin in the system.

If a plugin only contains an index.css and/or index.js file but no index.php, Kirby will load the plugin anonymously. This means that the name of your plugin cannot be properly displayed in the Panel's System view.

Plugins that don't have any of the index.php, index.css or index.js files are not loaded by Kirby at all.

Simple vs. complex plugins

If you only need some helper functions or general PHP code, you can define them in your index.php. These will then be loaded automatically.

If you want to extend Kirby in more meaningful ways such as by extending Kirby objects or components, you need to use our Kirby::plugin() method to define all the parts that will be extended.

Kirby::plugin() — one ring to rule them all

All plugins are registered with Kirby's static Kirby::plugin() method. It doesn't matter if you want to create just a simple KirbyTag plugin or a custom field for the Panel. Kirby::plugin() is your way to go.

Plugin name

Each plugin must have a unique name. We follow the typical Composer package name scheme here, so your plugin name must follow the format {your-name-or-alias}/{plugin-name}.

You are totally free to use whatever alias you like. Something like superwoman/superplugin is totally fine. The alias and plugin names must only contain characters from a-z, numbers and dashes though.

The plugin name can later be used to find a specific plugin:

It is also used to identify your plugin during the update check. If you publish your plugin, the name needs to match the path in our plugin repository. It does not need to match the Composer package name of your plugin.

Example: If your Composer package name is superwoman/kirby-superplugin, the plugin name you pass to Kirby::plugin() should be superwoman/superplugin as above.

Extensions

Your plugin can define any number of extensions for Kirby. Extensions can be blueprints, snippets, KirbyTags, fields and more.

A simple plugin

You can start simple by extending just one thing…

Plugins can provide entire sets of multiple extensions that work together and form big parts of a site.

Dynamic extensions

If you need to register extensions based on a config option, site content or even the availability of other plugins, you can do this inside a system.loadPlugins:after hook.

Panel-only plugins

If your plugin only defines Panel extensions or custom CSS for the Panel, your index.php only needs to define the name of your plugin and nothing else:

Please make sure to pass the empty array as the second argument. If you omit it, Kirby::plugin() will behave as a getter and your plugin will not be registered.

Plugin information

To store more information about your plugin, you can add a composer.json to your plugin folder. We recommend to use composer's composer init command to simplify this step. All information in the composer.json can later be queried from your plugin:

The fields in the example composer.json above are just the basic metadata fields. Composer is also a tool that's useful to install plugins. How to setup your plugin for that is explained in our plugin setup articles.

Note that the name inside the composer.json file is only the name of the Composer package. If needed, it can differ from the name you give your plugin when registering it with Kirby::plugin(), which will be used when getting plugin data.

Named arguments

Instead of providing all the information in the composer.json file, you can pass the same information also as info argument:

Moreover, you can provide the version directly as version argument:

If you create plugins with more than just one extension, we suggest the following folder structure within your plugin folder:

  • assets
  • blueprints
  • fields
  • snippets
  • tags
  • templates

Plugin assets

Each plugin can have its own assets folder with any number of additional assets, such as images or CSS and JS files. Kirby will automatically take care to make those assets publicly available without needing to copy them to a specific folder.

Asset URLs

Each asset in the assets folder of your plugin will be available at /media/plugins/superwoman/superplugin/.

The URL path is constructed with the name from your plugin definition and has nothing to do with the folder name of the plugin.

Plugin options

Your plugins can define their own set of options:

The values which you set for those options will be the default values. They can be overridden in the config file of the site.

Each of your plugin's options is automatically prefixed. The prefix is created from your plugin's name: superwoman/superplugin becomes superwoman.superplugin.

This will avoid any collisions with core options or options from other plugins.

Those options can be used anywhere in Kirby like this:

$kirby->option('superwoman.superplugin.apiKey');

Or with the option helper:

option('superwoman.superplugin.apiKey');

Options also need to be prefixed to be set in the config:
