Congratulations to RISD Brown Dual Degree alum and faculty member, Elizabeth Goodspeed for being selected as one of this year’s Young Guns Winners! From the One Club’s website: Elizabeth Goodspeed is an independent designer and art director based in Providence, Rhode Island. She’s collaborated with many studios, including Interbrand, Pentagram, Mythology, High Tide, and Gander, and has also worked directly with clients like Herman Miller, Phaidon / Monacelli, HBO, Google, and The Whitney Museum. In addition to her creative practice, Elizabeth is also the US Editor-at-large for It’s Nice That, publishes a newsletter about design history called "Casual Archivist," and writes for a range of publications like Fast Company, PORT, and AIGA Eye on Design about visual culture and other trend- and archive-related topics. She teaches at RISD and Parsons.

The department is hosting our open studio this Thursday, November 7th at 7:00 PM. Open studios are intended to provide introductory info, studio tours, and a good sense of the vibes in each major plus snacks and joyous whimsy. We hope to see you there!

Congratulations to Senior Critic Douglass Scott who has been elected to membership in the American Antiquarian Society (AAS), a 212-year-old national research library and community of learners dedicated to discovering and sharing a deeper understanding of the American past. AAS members range from scholars, collectors, and librarians to artists, writers, and history enthusiasts. Since the Society’s founding in 1812, fourteen United States presidents, more than seventy-five Pulitzer Prize winners, scores of Bancroft Prize winners, many Guggenheim fellows, and several MacArthur Award winners have been elected to membership.

To celebrate the launch of AMALGAM #5, curated, designed, and produced by Associate Professor, Pouya Ahmadi, RISD GD is holding an event on Wednesday, October 30th, from 5:00–7:00 pm in the GD Commons.
The fifth installment of Amalgam delves into the politics of alienation, exploring how these dynamics act as conduits for violence in its many forms.
The launch, moderated by Katherine Cooper, will feature a brief note by the editor and designer, Pouya Ahmadi, followed by readings from the issue and a conversation between the editor and contributors, Zoe Samudzi, Saman Sajasi, Stephanie Choi, and German Pallares Avita.

Associate Professor Anastasiia Raina organized an engaging two-day workshop for graduate and undergraduate students hosted by the GD department and NCSS (Nature-Culture Sustainability Studies). This event was held in collaboration with Laura Maria Gonzalez, a faculty member from Cornell University and a researcher at the MIT Media Lab, specializing in computational design, 3D printing, and synthetic biology. The workshop explored nature's diverse patterns and biomorphic structures to inspire innovative approaches to shaping letterforms.

RISD Graphic Design is thrilled to announce that Associate Professor Ramon Tejada has been awarded the 2024 Vilcek Prize in Design. From the Vilcek Foundation website: “The Vilcek Prizes are awarded to immigrants with a legacy of major accomplishment in the biomedical sciences and the arts and humanities, including: literature, culinary arts, music, filmmaking, architecture, dance, design, fashion, theatre, and visual arts. The Vilcek Prize includes a $100,000 cash award. Ramon Tejada receives the Vilcek Prize in Design for his leadership and commitment to accessibility and decolonization in design practices, and for his pedagogical approach that centers collaboration, inclusion, and radical innovation.” Congratulations Ramon!

To celebrate the launch of their newly-published book Overlap/Dissolve, Nancy Skolos and Tom Wedell mounted an exhibition of 36 posters in the GD Commons.

Undergraduate juniors exhibit their body of work from the entire academic year to the RISD community in a book-fair type format.

Tide Machine pulls data from ocean tide stations across the world to display the rise and fall of water levels at your location. Created in Graduate Studio 2 by Lian Fumerton-Liu, MFA 2023 (with assistance from Colin Dunn).

Recycled Pages, an exhibition of photographs of in-situ paper-based collages by Ben Denzer (MFA 2023), was up in the GD Commons in early April. See photographs of the exhibition.
Code Lab, organized by faculty Minkyoung Kim and Marie Otsuka, ran weekly tutoring sessions and workshops throughout the spring semester. Photographs from an AR workshop offered by Halim Lee (MFA 2023), who also designed the identity system for Code Lab. More information on Code Lab.
The Black Biennial was a student-led exhibition that brought together Black artists, designers and makers. Jenni Oughton's (MFA 2023) An Incomplete Archive of Capturing Blackness solicited visitors to suggest stories or artists that they believe have been “written out” of traditional narratives of Black History. Identity by Zoë Pulley (MFA 2023).
